The decade between 1970 and 1980 was a time of radical change and improvement, which is still par- tially noticeable today. The expansion of local traffic was of urban importance in Nuremberg. Along with the continuation of the underground from the main railway station through the southern part of the
city the establishment of a pedestrian area in the
Old Town was realized. Other major infrastructural projects were the construction of the state port, the relocation of the exhibition centre from the city park to Langwasser and the expansion of the airport. To accommodate the growing recreational needs of the population, in the eastern Pegnitz valley the artificial lake Wöhrder See was created as a local leisure cen- tre. The 1970s also stand for transformation in the city’s cultural sector. In Nuremberg the new decade started with a major event, giving the city’s cultural life essential impulses: in 1971 the 500th anniversary of Albrecht Dürer was celebrated with a whole bunch of events. The most innovative in that year was the Art Biennale and the arrangement of the Symposium Urbanum. Various museum facilities as well as popular tourist attractions are set-ups of this era. An insight into these “moving years” is conveyed in the colour and black and white photographs of this exhibition.
